COSEE Teachable Moment Workshop at Old Woman Creek

Huron, Ohio — August 6 – 7, 2007


The Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) is hosting a workshop at the Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve on August 6 and 7, 2007. Formal and non-formal educators for grades 4-10 are welcome to join us for a two-day up close look at estuaries and their relationship with the Lake Erie ecosystem. Scientists will share current research on estuaries and related topics and we will discuss how to incorporate this information into existing science curriculum. There will be classroom, lab and field work involved so please plan accordingly. A stipend of $50 is included, as are all meals and dormitory accommodations.

Old Woman Creek State Nature Preserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve

Current wetland and estuary research

  • 9:00 AM — 9:30 AM: Arrive at Old Woman Creek Visitor Center for introduction to research and overview of the schedule for the day
  • 9:30 AM — 9:45 AM: Travel to boathouse
  • 9:45 AM — 10:30 AM: Sediment core collection (Ale and Dave in coring boat; teachers and other observers in canoes)
  • 10:30 AM — 10:45 AM: Travel to OWC Visitor Center
  • 10:45 AM — 12:00 PM: Transfer sediment cores to ÒsqueezersÓ at the OWC wet lab
  • 12:00 PM: Break for lunch
  • 1:00 PM: Meet in the wet lab to begin extracting sediment porewaters and preparing samples for pH, iron and dissolved organic carbon analyses
  • 2:30 PM: Perform iron analyses
  • 3:30 PM: Overview of day; future plans with the sediment porewater data
  • 4:00 PM: End of day
  • 4:00 to 6:00PM break and dinner
  • 6:00 to 8:00 PM canoe or hike
