"Making a Great Lake Superior" Conference

Duluth, MN — October 29 – 31, 2007

Educators: Apply for a scholarship to participate in this international conference combining the best scientific, management, and education expertise available on Lake Superior!

The conference will include Lake Superior research, education, and management relating to:

  • Invasive species
  • Habitat and species management
  • Human health and safety
  • Areas of Concern
  • Non-point source pollution
  • Toxic pollutants
  • GIS and information management
  • Economic and environmental sustainability
  • Climate change
  • Water levels and lake withdrawals
  • Watershed stewardship
  • Fisheries and aquatic ecology

Teacher scholarships include free registration for the conference, substitute reimbursement directly to the school district, limited travel support on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the Greatest of the Great Lakes Lesson CD. Funding for teacher participation is limited, so please fill out and send in the registration/application form as soon as possible. We will request confirmation from your district once we have alerted you that you will receive a scholarship. CEUs are available.

If you are unable to attend the whole conference we recommend that you attend on Tuesday. Teachers receiving scholarships are expected to attend two events. A special Tuesday luncheon has been arranged to link scientists and managers with educators. This will be a great opportunity to have an interactive discussion with them and talk about applications of their work to classroom situations. On Tuesday afternoon there will be a facilitated workgroup to brainstorm additional classroom applications from what you have learned and to review the Greatest of the Great Lakes Medley of Model Lessons produced by COSEE Great Lakes.

If you wish to seek a scholarship or have additional questions, get in touch at chagley@umn.edu. The registration/application should be emailed or faxed to Cindy Hagley (FAX number 218-726-6556). We can't cover field trip or extra banquet ticket expenses through the scholarship; if you want to participate in those, please indicate on the form, and we'll coordinate payment. Take a look at the agenda and send in those applications!
